Boris Johnson on Twitter:

Racist thuggery has no place on our streets. Anyone attacking the police will be met with full force of the law. These marches & protests have been subverted by violence and breach current guidelines. Racism has no part in the UK and we must work together to make that a reality.

Keir Starmer on Twitter - Any violence against our police is completely unacceptable. No ifs, no buts. Today’s protests in London were led by those intent on causing violence and sowing hate for their own ends. We must not let them win.

David Lammy on Winston Churchill's statue

On the Andrew Marr Show, David Lammy was replying to a question on Winston Churchill’s statue,
“…well his statue should never have been attacked and the idiots that did it deflect from the central message of black lives matter but is anyone seriously calling for Winston Churchill statue to come down. I mean, I hope not. I mean clearly Winston Churchill stood in Parliament prior to the war he was one of the only MPs speaking out against appeasement, he then after Chamberlain resigned became leader and led a coalition government … that … that defeated fascism and for all of those reasons he’s hugely respected so I wouldn’t support his statue coming down but I recognise of course there’s a debate about what he did in Bengal with the famine, what he did in the Tony Pandy riot and I did a documentary for Channel 4…just a few months ago where I looked at his attitude to Africans that are contributed to the work first world war, and he was found wanting. Many great figures in history are also flawed, and we ought to be able to have that debate as well.”

In the House of Commons, Damian Green wanted assurance that if the trade deal does not happen with EU before 31 December, the Government will do everything in their power to avoid disruption to the local economy in his constituency.

Question asked by MP Damian Green (Ashford)

“I am sure that like me, my Rt. Hon. Friend (Jacob Rees-Mogg) wants to see the UK sign a trade deal with the EU before 31 December. He will be aware that if that does not happen, the disruption threatened to my constituency and large parts of east Kent will be huge, and disastrous for the local economy. Will he guarantee that the Government will not only keep this House updated regularly on the progress of the negotiations but do everything in their power to avoid the terrible disruption that would come with a disorderly end to the negotiations?”

Answered by Jacob Rees-Mogg (North East Somerset)

“The negotiations between the Government and the European Union on our future relationship continue, but we did get a deal back in January, and that is the basis for now going on to a future relationship. However, I assure him and his Kentish constituents that planning for the end of the transition period is well underway to ensure that we are ready to seize the opportunities of being outside the single market and the customs union. I am happy to say that our negotiators are working valiantly with their European counterparts to reach a deal on our future relationship, but whatever the outcome of the negotiations, we will be leaving the single market and customs union at the end of the year and plans are being made for that.”
